For good health, it is not enough that you see a doctor often, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. You also need to get enough sun exposure to maintain your serum 25(OH)D level at 30 ng/mL or higher.

The purpose of the Sunshine Health Foundation is to alert you to the dangers of insufficient sun exposure and to provide you with a correct, complete and current statement of the science of sun exposure and human health.

The Misconception of Sun Exposure

Health Requires Sunshine

The human body evolved in the sun and needs a certain minimum amount of sun exposure to function properly. Photons from the sun interact with the human body to produce a variety of specialized biomolecules that are essential to the proper functioning of the body’s complex chemistry. Vitamin D is the most well known of these biomolecules, but there are many others. Lack of a full tank of these biomolecules manifests in a wide variety of diseases and adverse health conditions and premature death. 70% of Americans of all ages suffer from the adverse effects of insufficient sun exposure.

Public Health Problem

Insufficient sun exposure has become the nation’s second largest public health problem, accounting for 340,000 preventable deaths per year and millions of preventable cases of heart disease, stroke, cancer, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, asthma, autism, defective brain development of fetuses, schizophrenia, eczema, psoriasis, myopia, macular degeneration, preterm birth, preeclampsia, maternal mortality, depression, schizophrenia, sudden infant death syndrome, shorter life expectancy and many other diseases and adverse health conditions. Insufficient Sun Exposure

The insufficient sun exposure problem has been caused by the migration of the workforce from outdoor to indoor work, by the attractions of being indoors such as air conditioning, television, video games and the internet, and in no small part by the incorrect and dangerous advice from health authorities telling the public that sun exposure is dangerous and should avoided, that sunscreen should applied on a daily basis, that school children should not go outside for recess on sunny days and that there is no health benefit from sun exposure that cannot be better obtained by taking vitamin D pills. Health authorities have also overstated and misstated the risk of skin cancer, have given incorrect advice to the public on how to avoid skin cancer, and have completely ignored the needs of Black Americans as if they did not exist.
